Summary: | Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) is a type of ferrite garnet material commonly applied in telecommunications technology, especially as a material for circulators installed in a series of telecommunications systems. The main parameters in determining the performance of YIG as a circulator are magnetic characteristics such as magnetization, saturation magnetization, and coercivity as well as the response to microwaves in the form of insertion loss. To get YIG with the desired characteristics, a special treatment is needed during fabrication, one of which is by adding doping material.
This study studied the effect of adding doping in the form of gadolinium (Gd) and cerium (Ce) ions on the magnetic characteristics and microwave response of YIG which will be observed through the results of the Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) test. In addition, the effect of adding doping on the formation of YIG compounds was also studied which will be observed through the results of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Doping variations are divided into three types, namely two single doping Gd and Ce and one Gd-Ce double doping, then the effect of the three doping variations will be compared to the magnetic characteristics. The value of the insertion loss is studied in relation to the saturated magnetization value, where the lower the saturation magnetization value will result in a lower insertion loss value. Data comparisons were carried out by comparing five different research papers discussing the effect of doping on magnetic characteristics of YIG.
Research from several scientific journals show that the addition of a single doping in the form of gadolinium ion can reduce the saturation magnetization value from 25 emu/g at x = 0 to 13 emu/g at x = 0.25. The addition of single doping in the form of cerium ions can increase the saturated magnetization value from 23.4 emu/g at x = 0 to 25.1 emu/g at x = 0.3 g then the value decrease to 15.9 emu/g at the doping composition of Ce is 0.6. Whereas in the addition of double doping there was an increase from 26 emu/g in the composition x = 0 and y = 0 to 28 emu / g at the composition of x = 0.1 and y = 0. Then the value decreased again with the increase in the composition of Gd (y) until it reaches 19.2 emu/g at the composition of x = 0.1 and y = 1. Overall, the use of single Gd doping is most effective in reducing the saturation magnetization value and also the insertion loss value. |
