Summary: | The Old City of Semarang is one of the most important historical areas of
colonialism in Indonesia. The history of its development can be traced from the port
city of the kingdom of Mataram to the business and government centers of
colonialism. The city's cultural identity forms the city of Semarang as it is today.
Awareness to preserve the cultural remembrance has started to spread in the
government and people of Semarang City itself, especially in facing UNESCO
World Heritage. However, there are still some buildings in Semarang Old City
which are not used and maintained. Lack of activity in buildings is a major issue
facing Semarang Old City today.
Looking at the history of Semarang City as the oldest business center in Indonesia,
the construction of offices in the old city area can evoke the image of the region.
The influx of industrial business influx from Jabodetabek to West Java can be a
potential to attract investors to Kota Lama. The Ex-Marabunta site location is an
ideal location for new activity magnet in east area of Semarang Old City. The
strategic location adjacent to the port and Tawang station is an attraction in itself.
In addition, vacant land conditions and positions on the edge of the old city provide
the potential for adaptation through the construction of office buildings
interpolated with community space, public space, resting area.
With this background, this thesis aims to elaborate the design of the head office for
industrial sector companies using a contemporary architectural approach to the
historic area. The study to be carried out is related to the role of office functions in
historic areas, adaptations of old buildings, and contemporary architectural
designs such as what is ideal for historic areas, especially at the Ex-Marabunta
site. The study will be integrated with regional analysis and cultural significance
of the old city and existing studies. The design will also consider the development
of the area going forward, giving attitude and character to new buildings and
public spaces that confirm the context and significance of the surrounding culture. |
