Description
Summary:
Absract:

TCP is the transport protocol widely and most used in the network today. Since it was used, TCP has received a lot of idea of modifications in order to respond the challenge of the fast growth of the network. TCP modification has brought into algorithm with four standardized phases. Those phases are slow start, congestion avoidance, fast retransmit and fast recovery.

Next development has suggested newer modifications on the standard TCP. Two popular modifications on Reno standard TCP, which are New Reno and Selective Acknowledgement, will be evaluated in this thesis and their performance will be compared to each other when they are used in network condition having link which is variable in bandwidth and in latency, limited gateway buffer size and competing UDP traffic.

These parameters are simulated to observe their effects on the performance of both TCP implementations. Simulation is performed using network simulator NS2. Overall observation on the simulation results shows that New Reno and Selective
Acknowledgement compete to give best performance under various conditions. However, Selective Acknowledgement perform better than New Reno under network condition that is getting worse.
