description |
One type of plastic that is widely recycled to reduce the amount of plastic waste in
the world is polypropylene (PP). Extrusion-based additive manufacturing (3D printing) is
one method of processing recycled (natural) PP products that can be used. The most
common type of this method is fused deposition modeling (FDM).
In this study, extruded filaments from a mixture of natural PP - pure (virgin) PP were
made in six variations of virgin PP content: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50% (w/w) with an
extrusion temperature of 180-200 oC and towing speed 20-30 mm/s. The filaments diameter
was measured and their defect analysis was performed. Tensile test specimens and samples
- including large (3 cm) and small (2 cm) sample cubes - for dimensional measurements
and visual defect analysis were then fabricated from these filaments with an FDM machine.
In general, maximum tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and maximum
elongation of natural PP - virgin PP mixture increase as the percentage of virgin PP
increases. There were several types of visual defects in the sample, including the most:
warping and cracking. The sample dimensions of the large cubes tend to be larger than their
original design dimensions, while the sample dimensions of the small ones are the opposite.
The addition of virgin PP to natural PP improves the mechanical properties of the
mixture. The temperature of the print bed that is too low causes warping and cracking to
occur in the product. The position of the nozzle against the print bed at the beginning of
printing that is too low, overextrusion, underextrusion, and shrinkage tolerance that is set
too low cause the product dimensions to not match the desired dimensions.
