Coalbed methane is coal seam that contains methane adsorbed on the coal matrix formed during the coalification process. CBM reservoirs are generally produced with pressure decline mechanism, firstly by dewatering process. Despite pressure decline mechanism is simple and effective, but not efficient due to the recovery of methane gas is generally not more than 50% of the initial gas in place. Enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery is a method to increase production and recovery of methane gas on CBM reservoir. Injection of CO2 is one of ECBM method. CO2 gas has a better affinity to the coal so it can displace the methane gas from the coal matrix and increase the production of methane, furthermore the injection of CO2 in CBM reservoirs can also reduce greenhouse gases. Horizontal wells are also commonly applied to the CBM reservoir and can increase methane gas recovery. Horizontal well is known to be effective in producing relatively thin reservoir layer as it can extend the contact area of the reservoir with the well. In this study the author will conduct a study on the effect of the injection flow rate, the distance between production wells and injection wells, and the length of lateral section of horizontal well on the recovery factor and the sweep efficiency of CO2 injected in the ECBM process with CO2 injection using horizontal well. The method used in this study is by reservoir simulation. Results show that the increase of injection flow rate and the distance between production well and injection well will increase the recovery factor, but will decrease the sweep efficiency of CO2 injected. Then, increasing the length of the lateral section of horizontal wells will increase the recovery factor but the sweep efficiency of CO2 injected depends on the relative distance between wells and the difference of flow rate increase of production and injection well. text |
