THE EFFECT OF SHEAR RATE TO SHEAR STRENGTH ON DIRECT SHEAR TEST

In geotechnical shear strength is one of the parameters to be noted. Deformations that occurring in rock mass are heavily influenced by sliding in the discontinuous plane and the amount of sliding (shear rate) can change whenever it can be, affected by several factors, such as due to tectonic earthquake activity, as well as volcanic activity around the mining site, then the effect of excavation around the slopes or the effect of vibration of the blast from the mining process itself. In this study the test was performed on a mixture of gypsum with water with a ratio of 4: 3. The gypsum mixture is molded in a mold intended for the uniaxial compressive strength test and for direct shear strength test, then casted using cement. In this test, shear rate is given variably i.e. 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, 0.06, and 0.07 mm/s. Then we analyze the effect of shear rate variation on shear strength, cohesion value, and internal friction angle. Based on the test results, the increase of displacement used in the test, then the value of shear strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle in the obtained are increase too. The increase occurred in both of peak and residual conditions. The increase in shear parameter values of residual shear conditions is greater than the peak condition in line with the increase in shear rate. The effect of shear rate variation on the most significant shear strength parameter occurred at the value of cohesion, the resulting increase reached 3.7 times for residual conditions. text
