INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/54666 Membrane contactor is a technology that combines the principle of separation using a membrane and gas-liquid absorption. The membrane contactor process has various advantages including having a higher contact area compared to conventional absorption. Each module type has different efficiency on membrane contactor operation. Therefore, module configuration development is one of the keys to increase the separation process efficiency. This type of research is a literature review. The data used in this research is secondary data from scientific articles or journals. The procedure in this study includes collecting and organizing data to be reviewed then data synthesis. The main objectives of this literature study are to compare the types of membrane contactor modules, to determine the effect of flow patterns on membrane contactors for component fluks, to determine the effect of module design factors, applications, challenges and prospects for the development of membrane contactors in the future. Based on the membrane module type, the hollow fiber membrane is more efficient than other module types because it has higher interface area and lower pressure drop during process operation. Based on the flow pattern, the crossflow module has the best CO2 absorption approximately at 80%, where the solution is in the shell and the gas is in the lumen. For the design factor, low density modules produce higher absorption fluks than high density modules, and the height of the membrane layer affects the CO2 concentration obtained. The development of the membrane contactor configuration has been used in various applications such as the capture of acid gas components from the gas mixture, gas humidity control, oxygenation, deoxygenation, ozonation processes, and refrigeration systems. This study is expected to be able to provide scientific benefits regarding the development of a membrane contactor module in the gas-liquid separation process. text
