Summary: | Electricity is one of the important energy for human needs at this time. Electrical energy is produced by various methods, one of which is by using steam. Steam power is produced by heating water until it turns into steam. The heat that is needed when heating water into steam, one of which is produced from burning coal. The result of burning coal is in the form of gas emissions. Emission gas cannot be directly discharged into the atmosphere because it contains gases that will damage the environment, one of which is carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide is an emission gas, carbon dioxide gas produced by combustion in coal power plants cannot be released in large quantities into the atmosphere because it will cause global warming, so coal power plants must install carbon dioxide gas capture units to separate carbon dioxide gas from the gas that will be released into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide capture units are very expensive, so it is a burden for the power plant. Therefore the carbon dioxide produced from capture must be processed in order to produce economic value for the PLTU.
In this study the coal-fired power plant is designed to produce 1000 MW of electricity which is also installed with a carbon dioside capture unit. The carbon dioxide gas that has been captured is then used as a raw material for producing methanol by hydrogenation reaction with hydrogen added to the reaction. Hydrogen is produced using an electrolysis reaction that requires water and also produces a by-product, oxygen.
The power plant that has been integrated with the carbon dioxide processing unit is then analyzed both technically and economically to find out whether the power plant can run both technically and economically.
iv
1000MW coal-fired power plant requires 255 tons of coal / hour, and produces 652 tons / hour of carbon dioxide. The hydrogen needed to process carbon dioxide is 89.6 tons / hour. Methanol produced was 2.08 million tons / year, with methanol yield of 0.53 tons / 1 ton of carbon dioxide, with purity of methanol reaching 99%. The operating conditions in the methanol production reactor are 100 bar pressure and 130oC temperature.
Hydrogen production by electrolysis is still not possible because the cost of electrolysis is still very expensive, so PLTU is not economically feasible, but it does not rule out the possibility that electrolysis can be used in the future if electrolysis costs are not expensive.
Coal power plants should be established where the location has an abundant source of coal, and in Indonesia it is located in Central Kalimantan. Coal power plant integrated with methanol production unit not feasibel after an economic analysis, where the NPV value is negative at Rp -1,99 trillion, IRR is 5% which is lower than the interest rate of banks in general which is 5.5% and also the value The DPBP is the time when the PLTU has returned its capital, and the DPBP is over than 30 years.
