Summary: | Rising demand and production decline of crude oil is one of the main reasons for applying enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology. EOR is a technique to increase oil production and recovery that uses energy from outside reservoir. Steam injection, chemical and gas injection is are some examples of EOR techniques. However, in an oil field, not just one EOR technique can be applied. By looking at the advantages of each of the existing techniques, some techniques can be combined such as water alternating with gas (WAG) which is a combination of water injection and gas injection. Nitrogen can be obtained from air that has no limits and practically at no cost. In addition, nitrogen is an inert gas that is not corrosive. While the source of water for the WAG could be obtained from produced water or the nearest water source. Water injection can also function as reservoir pressure maintenance when the production is declining.
This study presents the injection design using water alternating with nitrogen gas in order to increase recovery factor of an oil field. A compositional reservoir simulation model has been used in this study. The study started with an evaluation whether the water alternating with nitrogen gas can provide better oil recovery compared with water injection and nitrogen injection alone. Then, the design the injection water alternating with nitrogen gas was varied by considering fluid for the first injection, injection rate, injection period and WAG ratio, so that we obtained water alternating with nitrogen gas that gives the highest oil recovery.
Simulation results show that the highest oil recovery in scheme design with first water injecting, injection rate 900 STBD, injection period 2 years and WAG ratio one for water and two for nitrogen gas that can obtained 62.3% oil recovery. From this study, it can be concluded that the design parameters of injection water alternating with nitrogen gas can be obtained better oil recovery than compared with water injection and nitrogen injection alone. |
