Description
Summary:Neurological diseases such as Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders can be treated with one of the antipsychotic drugs, Risperidon. Risperidon has been produced and marketed by the medicinal industry for the treatment of various neurological diseases. Risperidon in industry is synthesized through two compounds in water and optimized by several methods and parameters to obtain an effective and optimal synthesis method. In this study, a laboratory scale synthesis of risperidon was carried out using two methods of synthesis and optimization of the purification technique. The methods used in this research includes organic synthesis using the reflux method (conventional) and the MAOS method or Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis. In addition, the use of water and sodium carbonate as the most appropriate medium and base, respectively, for the synthesis reaction was also compared contrastly with other reagents. Synthesis by reflux method produced risperidon with yield up to 93% (3 hours, 90-100 °C). Meanwhile, for synthesis using the MAOS method, the yield was up to 94% (3 hours, 70 °C). The optimal synthesis method is expected to be applied on a higher scale to an industrial scale.
