Description
Summary:Field sowthistle and java tea have been used traditionally to treat kidney stone. Most kidney stones consist of calcium phosphate and calcium oxalate. An in-vitro study is needed, to verify its effect in treatment of kidney stone, also in this study the combination of both plants extract at various ratio to inhibit calcium phosphate and calcium oxalate crystallization was conducted. This study is conducted by preparing calcium phosphate system and calcium oxalate system, and both system is at supersaturated condition. At those systems, the extract is added and the percent inhibition were calculated. The combination used is conducted in 2 methods, extract combination and simplisia combination. Inhibitory activity is determined by measuring calcium ion precipitates from the system that has been redissolved by chloride acid. Calcium ion was measured by complexometric titration using Na-EDTA and EBT as an indicator, pH was maintained at 10 by ammonia buffer. Pecent inhibition of calcium phosphate crystallization by extract combination, the ratio between field sowthistle leaves and java tea leaves which have the highest activity was 50:50 with the percent inhibition of 16,23 ± 0,75 %. On the other hand, for the method of simplisia combination, the ratio between field sowthistle leaves and java tea leaves which have the highest activity was 50:50 with the percent inhibition of 29,77 ± 0,92 %. For the percent inhibition of calcium oxalate crystallization with the extract combination, the ratio between field sowthistle leaves and java tea leaves which have the highest activity was 75:25 with the inhibition percentage of 37,07 ± 4,19 %. On the other hand, for the simplisia combination method, the ratio between field sowthistle leaves and java tea herbs which have the highest activity was 25:75 with the inhibition percentage of 34,17 ± 1,44 %. Either extract combination or simplisia combination methods are capable to inhibit crystallization of calcium phosphate and calcium oxalate.
