Summary: | Obesity is a condition of abnormal or excessive of fat accumulation in adipose tissue which
can lead to health problems such as diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, stroke, and
increase the risk of death. Obesity can be treated pharmacologically and nonpharmacologically. One of the non-pharmacological therapy that has been well known by
people is acupuncture. One of Indonesian acupuncture method is Ganesha Indonesia
Acupuncture. This study is a follow-up study that aims to determine the effectiveness of
"GI" acupuncture by completing data on obesity research in 2011 on the same topic,
accompanied with the addition of other parameter, hip-waist ratio. This research is a
concurrent observational study on “GI”acupuncture patients at Bumi Medika Ganesha
Clinic and “GI”Acupuncture Clinic at Sukamenak Kopo conducted for ±8 months. The
obese condition was evaluated quantitatively in body weight, waist circumference and hip
circumference measurements, while qualitatively by interviews. Each of these data was
processed and the data were associated with a number of acupuncture therapy on the 3rd,
5th, 7th, 11th, 15th, 17thand23rd oftherapy. Statistical testsshowed that there issignificant
differences between the percentage of weight loss with the number of acupuncture therapy
at 11th therapy (p<0.05), there is a significant difference between the percentage of waist
circumference decrease with the number of acupuncture therapy at 15th therapy (p<0.05),
there is asignificant difference between the percentage of hip-to-waist circumference ratio
decrease with the number of acupuncture therapy at17th therapy (p<0,05). Correlation test
showed there is positive relationship between the percentage of weight loss, the percentage
of waist circumference decrease and the percentage hip-to-waist circumference ratio
decrease with the number of acupuncture therapy. Gender, physical activity, age, and diet
are the factors that could affecting the outcome of “GI”acupuncture therapy in obese
patients. "GI" Acupuncture that performed routinely twice a week were able to lose weight
1.867±1.03% at therapy 11th, waistcircumference were decrease 1.715±1.26% at therapy
15th and the hip-waist ratio were decrease 1.404+1,12% at therapy 17th. Thus"GI"
Acupuncture is effective in addressing the problem of obesity.
