In this work, the author reports a study on Graphite-Pol ytheyl ene composite made by mixing graphite powder obtained from electrodes of discharged battery C par ti cl a size < 53 pm7 or pure synthetic graphite powder (particle size < 50 pm) as filler with high density polyethylene C HDPE7 as matrix. The Graphite-Polyethylene composite was made by hot mixing and hot pressing methods.

Results on tensile strength, electrical resistivity, melting point, and thermal degradation of the composite indicate that graphite from discharged batteries could be utilized as a compatible filler material in the Graphite-Polyethylene composite system. The electrode derived graphite-polyethylene system has similar physico-chemical properties compared to the composite made by mixing pure synthetic graphite as filler.

Results also show that both types of graphite are useful as the reinforcing materials by improving the tensile strength of the composite. Tensile strength of both types of composite is found higher than those of pure polyethylene, when graphite concentration is less than or equal to 21 \\\'X.-volume. Further, results show that Graphite-Polyethylene composite behaves semi conducti vel y when the graphite content is higher than 21 %-volume. Nevertheless, the graphite content of both types of composites do not practically affect the thermal stabilities (melting point and degradation temperature) of the composites. I t only decreases the composite melting A H and AS, which is related to the increase in electrical /thermal conductivities of the composite. Hence, the thermal stability of Graphite-Polyethylene composite in terms melting and thermal degradation, were only determined effectively by the thermal stability of polyethylene solely. |
