EVALUATION OF THE APPLICATION OF SYSTEMS ENGINEERING FRAMEWORK IN THE CONTEXT OF SMALL AIRCRAFT DEVELOPMENT: CASE STUDY OF GL-1 GLIDER
Several developments of small aircraft have been carried out by FTMD ITB, including: unmanned vehicles such as Runway Contour Mapping (RCM) Drones, and High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs, manned vehicles such as the GL-1 glider, and development of subsystems of vehicles such as MALE UAV and KF...

In general, the products developed are in the form of a system consisting of several systems (system of systems). The problem that arises from a system of systems is its complex nature, so that conventional approaches cannot be used. Systems engineering is a framework that can be a solution to these problems, because it can deal with the complexity of the system, and considers the existence of interdisciplinary, iterative methods, socio-technological effects, and sees it from an overall point of view. Understanding and mastery of systems engineering will be very important in the development of small aircraft. This understanding includes how the systems engineering framework is in general as well as case studies of the application of the systems engineering framework to the development of a small aerial vehicle. Developments that have been carried out, such as the GL-1 glider aircraft, can be used as case studies, to evaluate the systems engineering framework. This thesis aims to determine the extent to which the systems engineering approach is applied to the development of small aircraft. Fulfillment of these objectives is carried out with the following steps: • Conduct studies on systems engineering in general; • A case study on the application of a systems engineering framework to the development of a small aerial vehicle, in this case the GL-1 glider; • Evaluate the case studies that have been carried out; and • Propose a draft systems engineering framework for the development of small aircraft. The research process begins with a literature study to better understand the systems engineering approach. Several systems engineering framework references are identified, described, and discussed, so that the important characteristics can be obtained and a general systems engineering framework can be formulated. Also formulated a framework that can illustrate the systems engineering process in various phases of the life cycle of a product. The development of GL-1 was chosen for the case study because it is considered quite complex with fairly complete data. Activities and documents that have been carried out in the development of GL-1 are mapped on the systems engineering framework and evaluated on how they are implemented The development of GL-1 can be mapped on the systems engineering framework that has been created, although there are still many processes that have not been fulfilled. In addition, there are several problems that arise, which can be overcome by implementing systems engineering from the start. The evaluation results show that the application of the SE process can help the development of the GL-1 in particular, and the development of small aircraft in general. text |

Several developments of small aircraft have been carried out by FTMD ITB, including: unmanned vehicles such as Runway Contour Mapping (RCM) Drones, and High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs, manned vehicles such as the GL-1 glider, and development of subsystems of vehicles such as MALE UAV and KFX/IFX.
Fulfillment of these objectives is carried out with the following steps:
• Conduct studies on systems engineering in general;
• A case study on the application of a systems engineering framework to the development of a small aerial vehicle, in this case the GL-1 glider;
• Evaluate the case studies that have been carried out; and
• Propose a draft systems engineering framework for the development of small aircraft.
Activities and documents that have been carried out in the development of GL-1 are mapped on the systems engineering framework and evaluated on how they are implemented
The development of GL-1 can be mapped on the systems engineering framework that has been created, although there are still many processes that have not been fulfilled. In addition, there are several problems that arise, which can be overcome by implementing systems engineering from the start. The evaluation results show that the application of the SE process can help the development of the GL-1 in particular, and the development of small aircraft in general.
