Throughout 2020, PT BOS faced a challenging business situation where one of the measured performance metrics, the rig cycle time for workover job with drilling out cement (DOC) activity, was 12.5% higher than planned. This has an impact on increasing company's operating expenditure. A research needs to be performed to solve the business issue experienced by PT BOS. There were several research objectives to be achieved, including: looking for causal factors that cause problem; Seeking what factor(s) that could significantly influence the rate of penetration (ROP); Obtaining optimal settings for drilling parameters to obtain maximum ROP; and developing control plan for implementing solutions that have been tested so that the solution can be sustained in the future. Based on the results of group discussions involving a team of company experts and stakeholders using the five why analysis, it found that the root cause was no available technical guidance on optimum DOC parameters using scientific approach. The design of experiment (DOE), which is a structured scientific approach for conducting an experiment, would be applied to identify input variables that affect the output of the DOC process, so then it could be optimized to get optimum input setting for getting maximum ROP. A series of steps need to be taken in conducting research, including: determining factor, levels and response; Screening looking for the factors that have a significant effect on the response that will be varied when conducting an experiment; Selecting the best experiment design for DOC process; Conducting experiments based on designs that have been made; Analyzing experiment data, draw conclusions to make predictions based on existing models, and perform confirmation test of these predictions. By applying the proposed solution, this research could deliver delightful outcomes for the company such as increasing in average ROP for DOC process by 57% and reducing ROP variance by 71.6%, so that it could significantly contribute to reduce the actual rig cycle time for workover job with DOC activity by 10.8% worth $ 25,500 per month from operational expenditure saving and revenue increase. text
