The existing SWC technology SWC maintains system frequency by absorbing active power and can only overcome the system's over-frequency condition. However, the use of SWC can increase system losses which also causes a large amount of operation cost. In this study, a new SWC control system will be designed by considering active power losses so that the operation cost of SWC can be reduced. Both technical and cost analysis will be carried out to assess and to evaluate the profitability of the compensator. The results show that the new SWC control system can maintain system frequency system in both over-frequency and under-frequency conditions with smaller power losses than the previous SWC design. text |

Smelting is a process of refining raw mineral materials that use an electric arc
furnace working principle, which converts electrical energy into heat energy to melt
raw ore. Electric arc furnaces are non-linear loads that consume large amounts of
power and change very quickly over time. This characteristic of electric arc furnace
that fluctuate rapidly may cause several problems such as system frequency
instability. To avoid the intermittent nature of an electric arc furnace, a Static Watt
Compensator can be used.
The existing SWC technology SWC maintains system frequency by absorbing active
power and can only overcome the system's over-frequency condition. However, the
use of SWC can increase system losses which also causes a large amount of
operation cost. In this study, a new SWC control system will be designed by
considering active power losses so that the operation cost of SWC can be reduced.
Both technical and cost analysis will be carried out to assess and to evaluate the
profitability of the compensator. The results show that the new SWC control system
can maintain system frequency system in both over-frequency and under-frequency
conditions with smaller power losses than the previous SWC design. |
