Abstract: <p align=\"justify\"> <br /> An investigation on the production and breakdown rate of mangrove\'s litter has been conducted at the swamp forest of RPH Tritih, Cilacap, Central Java. The litter was colected using litter traps made of nylon mesh. The traps were positioned under the tree\'s canopy in three different locations namely in pond system, riverine and swamp forest, each with five traps. The litter was collected monthly for eight months period. For investigating the rate of litter breakdown, bags made of nylon mesh with 2 mm pores were used. Nylon bag was filled with 20 g dry weight leaf and put on the forest\'s floor. Monthly rate of breakdown was determined based on weight difference between the initial and final weight within six months period. Annual total litter falls (dry weight) was highly found at the location of river (16.44 tons ha-1 year-1), followed by mangrove at pond (13.37 tons ha-1 year-1) and mangrove at swamp (8,62 tons ha-1 year-1). The litters of the three locations were composed of leaves (57%, 65% and 81%), branch (7%, 4% and 2%) and reproductive parts (36%, 31% and 17%) of mangroves. The litter of Rhizophora mucronata was the highest in number (42%), followed by R. apiculata (38%) and Avicennia alba (12%); the remainder (8%) was consisted of other species such as, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Sonneratia sp,. Aegiceras corniculatum, Finlaysonia obovata and Derris trifoliata. The level of litter production was correlated with the level of growth of the plant. The pick of litter production wasoccurred at the end of dry season (from July to September) and correlated with the rainfall (r= -0.81), duration of sunlight daily (r= 0.60) and wind speed (r= 0.54). The litter fall could be used to predict the phenology of mangrove. The breakdown rate at pond, river and swamp was not significantly different with the average of 16.9 - 17.4% month-1. Monthly breakdown rate for all locations was 6.0-34,3% month-l, the highest was occurred in the first month, declined until the third month and constant until 99.7% of the litter was decomposed at the end of the sixth month. <p align=\"justify\"> <br />
