Traditional ornament is an important cultural heritage of Indonesia and is also the identity of the traditional art of a region. Each type of traditional ornament in Indonesia from each region has its own characteristics, meaning, and philosophy. One unique heritage of Indonesian traditional ornament is the traditional tattoo from Iban Dayak, West Kalimantan. This tattoo culture was originally a hereditary tradition with a noble philosophical meaning. In the Iban Dayak community, tattoos are used as a way to communicate nonverbally. These tattoo ornaments symbolize self-identity such as social status and life experiences that the individual has gone through. Unfortunately, in this modern era, the tattoo culture is fading, and many Dayak youth gave up their tradition of tattooing the body. This is due to the negative stigma of the Indonesian people outside the Dayak tribe. The number of companies or agencies that prohibit their employees from having tattoos on their bodies also makes it difficult for Dayak people to find work, especially in urban areas. In this research, traditional Iban Dayak tattoo ornaments were developed and integrated into a national costume design, which is a type of costume that is currently attracting public attention by being exhibited at beauty pageants. Costume is a textile craft that can represent and describe the characteristics or stories of a concept. By applying the values, meanings, and concepts of the traditional Dayak tattoo ornaments and integrating them into a national costume design, hopefully this research can increase the general public's awareness of the traditional Dayak tattoo culture. text |
