The lack of interest in reading in Indonesia has a direct impact on the low level of literacy in society. In an effort to increase literacy in Indonesia, the people's interest in reading must be developed beforehand. There are several factors that contribute to the low interest in reading in Indonesia, including the public’s low purchasing power of books and the lack of adequate libraries in Indonesia. The low purchasing power of the public can be resolved by the existence of a library which is a facility that provides access to books and other forms of information for free. Data is collected through literature studies related to Indonesia’s low level of literacy and components in library design as well as distributing questionnaires to collect data on the low interest in reading and in libraries. The collected data is used as a reference to produce criterias for a well-designed library, namely one that is capable of providing a functioning facility and creating an atmosphere that supports said function.
