The bottled mineral water industry is widely known to be one of the biggest contributors of the global plastic packaging waste. For each plasticpackaging that is produced one piece of plastic waste is made. The build-up of plastic waste has been growing at a rate that outpaces the capacity of waste recycling facilities. Efforts to switch from the conventional polymer factory material such as PET and rPET to more oft-proposed bioplastic-based materials would inevitably bring with it its own set of consequences, such as resource depletion and environmental damage from industrial farming. By harnessing the momentum from recently growing environmentalawareness and sustainable living trends, paving the way for bottled water companies to offer alternative business models supporting ways to procure and connect with their products, such as with bulk-buying and bring-your-own-bottle schemes. These efforts to reduce the need for a single-use container would also, in turn, stall the demand of bottled packaging and decrease the production rate of plastic packaging. text |
