Summary: | Based on data from The Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia, the total confirmed COVID-19 cases
and deaths in Indonesia reached 1.583.182 cases (per 14 April 2021) and 42.906. The Indonesian
Government has executed some initiatives. But, those initiatives still can not decrease the infection
rate of COVID-19 yet, indicated by the rising of COVID-19 prevalence from day to day. According to
WHO and The Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia, one of the COVID-19 prevention is by washing
hands with soap. However, conventional soap has some limitations, which are being hydrolyzed in
water and releasing base that can increase the pH of soap and may lead to skin dryness and acne.
Innovation in paper soap is expected to be the solution for avoiding the public usage of soap especially
at COVID-19 pandemic and more practical usage for outside home activity. The addition of olive oil in
the paper soap as emollient can be alternative to prevent skin dryness. This study aims to collect data
about the method of production, formulation design, stability, safety, and evaluation of olive oil
nanoemulsion paper soap. Then, the data obtained is extracted and analyzed according to purpose.
This literature review is carried out using search engines Google Scholar and Pubmed. Olive oil
contains some chemical compounds like oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, monounsaturated
(MUFAs), and polyunsaturated (PUFAs) acids as emollient and skin supplementation. However, the
outer part of skin is composed of very tight stratum corneum. Emulsion has limited penetration when
compared with nanoemulsion. So, nanoemulsion will be used to enhance the penetration of olive oil
into the skin. Based on the literature review, surfactant Cremophor RH 40 and cosurfactant PEG 400
can increase the stability of the product. Based on the safety analysis of the compound, the designed
formula doesn’t cause irritation and safe for human skin. The designed formulation of olive oil
nanoemulsion paper soap also potentially has antibacterial activity in vitro.
