According to ICSHP 2019, there are approximately 1.06 billion people (13%) in the entire world that are predominantly part of the rural community, that do not have access to electricity. South East Asian nations are now facing this big challenge related to the fulfillment of energy because of the rapid economic and demographic growth in the last 25 years. Unfortunately, according to ACE in 2020, South East Asian nations are one of the largest contributors of the production of Green House Gasses (GHG) a cause of global warming because of the massive electricity production based on fossil fuels. Now, some South East Asian nations have began the effort to analyze the potential of hydroelectricity in South East Asia in order to support sustainable development to ensure affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern access to energy. The potential of hydroelectricity is identified by its geographic, theoretic, and socio-economic aspect. The hydrographic product, MERIT Hydro is used to observe the theoretic aspect such as analyzing river debit, head, and rainfall. The geographic aspect is analyzed by the land cover and river characteristics to produce a suitable area for building a hydroelectric electricity generator. The socio-economic aspect is observed by analyzing the consumption of electric energy in urban and rural areas. The results of this study showed that Vietnam and Cambodia have a deficit in electricity, with the total electricity consumption of rural areas higher than urban areas. The total potential of hydropower in Vietnam is 115 Micro hydropower points, 194 Mini hydropower points, and 114 Small hydropower points, while Cambodia has 68 Micro hydropower points, 72 Mini hydropower points, and 4 Small Hydropower Points. It is expected that this study may help the government or other authorities to create a renewable energy source as an effort towards fulfilling the increasing need for energy. It is also expected that this study may help the government to evaluate the distribution and fulfillment of electric energy in South East Asian nations. text
