THE EFFECT OF LUBRICATION ON WEAR RESISTANCE OF LOW CARBON STEEL AND GRAY CAST IRON

Steel and gray cast iron has been the most produced and used in engineering applications. In its application, steel and gray cast iron will have friction with other surfaces, thus a lubricant is used to mitigate wear. In this research, the effect of lubrication on the wear resistance of low carbo...

In its application, steel and gray cast iron will have friction with other surfaces, thus a lubricant is used to mitigate wear. In this research, the effect of lubrication on the wear resistance of low carbon steel and grey cast iron will be analyzed. A pin-on-disk wear test has been done on both materials in dry dan lubricated conditions. Two motor oil lubricants (SAE 10W40 & SAE 15W40) was used in this experiment to analyze the effect of lubrication on wear resistance. The experiment was done by applying 1000 gram of load for 65 minutes on the low carbon steel and gray cast iron speciments in dry and lubricated conditions. Applying lubricats both on gray cast iron have improved its wear resistance by 3400%. Whereas the wear resistance of low carbon steel was improved by 4100%. Deviating from literature, the wear resistance of gray cast iron was lower than low carbon steel due to the presence of porosity. text
