Summary: | The North Bandung Area (NBA) has been designated by the government as a
protected area that has a considerable influence on water management in the area
below. Changes in land cover in NBA can cause environmental problems, such as
decrease in water reserves, floods, landslides, and increase in Land Surface
Temperature (LST) which have an impact on the health and comfort of the
community. This study aimed to analyze changes in land cover and LST in NBA
in 2010, 2014 and 2018 and to find the relationship between land cover and LST.
This study used Landsat 5 and 8 Surface Reflectance (SR) Tier 1 imagery data,
West Java land cover maps produced by BAPPEDA West Java, and RBI
administration maps at a scale of 1: 25,000 to obtain maps of NBA land cover and
LST. The results showed that the types of land cover in the NBA consisted of
vegetation (forest), water bodies (rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and lakes), open areas
(gardens, fields, rice fields, and shrubs), and built-up areas (settlements, industry
and buildings). The percentage of open area in NBA from 2010-2018 decreased
from 67.6% to 57.5%. However, there were also an increase in the vegetation area
from 9.6% to 14.7% and the built-up area from 22.8% to 27.7 %. LST in NBA
could be divided into three classes: low, medium and high with the average in
2010, 2014 and 2018 respectively were 22.5 ° C; 23.6 ° C; and 23.4 ° C. The
percentage of areas with low LST decreased from 19% to 16%. This was
presumably due to the conversion of vegetated areas into other areas, such as
residential areas. The percentage of areas with moderate LST in 2010-2018
decreased from 61.3% to 51.7%, while areas with high LST increased from 18.7%
to 30.3% in line with the addition of the built-up area in the NBA. The increase in
vegetation area in 2018 occurred in the Cimenyan and Cilengkrang areas due to
the Collaborative Community Forest Resource Management Program. LST will
be greatly influenced by the presence of vegetation and water bodies. The addition
of 5% vegetation in the NBA did not actually reduce the surface temperature due
to the addition of the built-up area. Therefore, planting plants, especially trees,
must be done to reduce LST in the North Bandung Area. |
