LIQUID-LIQUID EQUILIBRIUM CALCULATION OF VEGETABLE OIL-FREE FATTY ACIDS-AQUAEOUS ALCOHOL SYSTEM USING UNIFAC MODEL

Vegetable oil is commonly used as the main raw material in the food industry. Free fatty acids are impurities that need to be removed from vegetable oils because they are unhealthy and reduce the stability of the oil. Free fatty acids are impurities that need to be removed from vegetable oils because they are unhealthy and reduce the stability of the oil. The liquid-liquid extraction method using aqueous alcohol is seen as an alternative to conventional methods because it can reduce the loss of neutral oil and nutrient damage, involves renewable solvents, and requires less energy. The design and evaluation of liquid-liquid extraction require equilibrium data. For computational purposes, the data is summarized in the form of a mathematical model. One of the most widely used models is UNIFAC. Vegetable oils contain a variety of triglycerides. The free fatty acids in vegetable oils, as a result of hydrolysis of triglycerides, also contain various types of fatty acids. Modeling using triglycerides and free fatty acids as one component respectively simplifies and speeds up the calculation. This research is aimed at developing a representative model of vegetable oils and fatty acids. This research also aims to test UNIFAC parameters from the literature developed by using vegetable oil and free fatty acids as multi-components for the representative model developed in this study. Parameter testing involves equilibrium data as many as 199 tie lines from various literature. Equilibrium calculations are done using MATLAB software. Two representative models of vegetable oil and free fatty acid have been developed, namely the majority model based on the majority component and the average model based on the average composition. The accuracy of both models is relatively the same and similar to the multicomponent model which has an error of 2.99%. The average model with an error of 3.01% is slightly more accurate than the majority model with an error of 3.15%. Hirata et al. and Batista et al. UNIFAC parameters are accurate enough to be used in equilibrium calculations using the average model. The errors for Hirata et al. and Batista et al. parameters are 3.01% and 4.89%, respectively. text
