Summary: | The definition of herd mentality is a new mentality that formed based on agglomeration
of a group of people, which puts aside individual personality and opinion, and prioritizing
the group’s goal. The increasing numbers of time and people that use social media
becomes one of the reasons that accelerates how this psychological group formed. This is
why there’s a need to give information about the negative impact of herd mentality to
adolescence between age 13 – 17, since that is the age for a person to be eligible to use
social media. Adolescence becomes the primary target because of the psychological traits
that they bear, such as unstable emotion; focusing on social – approval; the age where
they search for their identity; etc, that makes them vulnerable to the negative impact of
herd mentality. The methods that this research use is the combination of quantitative and
qualitative research, where the data were collected from an online survey and
observation, which will be analyzed using literature review and interview with an expert.
The result shows that there’s still the possibility of the target getting influenced by herd
mentality, such as actively showing disapproval of certain topic (comment, dislike, etc);
become the victim of herd mentality (cyberbullying); nearly half of the respondent said
they’ve changed their mind on a certain topic after they read it online; and some
respondent chooses to defend someone because they conformed to the majority. In
response to this problem, animation is considered as suitable media to convey the
message, because of its flexible nature that doesn’t need to follow logical or realistic
measures, which makes it able to tell a story in more interesting way. Metaphors have a
role on packing up an abstract message into more simplified form so that it will be able to
be understood easily. The core message that this animation brings is how an action that
someone does on herd mentality could bring a negative influence on themselves |
