THE POTENTIAL OF NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS AS AN EFFORT FOR WATER POLLUTION CONTROL USING SYSTEM DYNAMICS APPROACH (CASE STUDY OF CIKAPUNDUNG WATERSHED)

Urban development and population growth have led to increased urban activities and increase land requirenments (for settlement, etc), so that it has impact on changes in ecological condition and causing environmental degradation. The existence of Cikapundung watershed plays an important role for societiy viability around the riverbanks. The potential for water pollution in Cikapundung watershed is very high, caused by high pollutant waste that enters due to human activities and the increasing number of settlements along the river. Therefore, efforts to control water pollution in Cikapundung watershed need to be done properly. The aim of the research is to identify the potential of Nature Based Solutions as an effort to reduce the load pollution and overcome the decrease in water quality in Cikapundung watershed. This research was conducted by analizing water quality and pollution levels, determining the pollution load, and indentifying the potential of Nature Based Solutions for water pollution control. Water pollution control model in the Cikapundung watershed consists of social and population sub-models and environmental sub-models using Powersim Sutdio 10. The result of the analysis show that existing conditions of water pollutant parameter such as total suspended solids (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were higher than the allowable class I standard. The sources of Cikapundung watershed pollution mainly are domestic waste with load of BOD, COD, and TSS are 975, 3.494, dan 3.543 ton/year.The pollution load of the three parameters has exceeded the assimilation capacity of the waters. The model simulation results show that the moderate and optimistic scenarios are able to reduce the water pollution load by 50% and 75% respectively under the exixting conditions. Nature Based Solutions have potential to help water pollution control and provide many co-benefits for the Cikapundung watershed ecosystem. Nature Based Solutions can be applied based on regional conditions and the scale of its application, in the upstream Filter Strip can be applied in agricultural areas along river flows, in the middle Filter Strip can be applied on road banks and Rain Garden at home yards, while in the downstream a Constructed Wetland can be built on the floodplain as a place to filter pollutants and store water. text
