The coupling beams are usually designed to be inelastic. However, repair of coupling beams after earthquake are usually difficult and impractical. An innovation for developing a structural system that is easily repaired and implemented is by connecting the shear walls with steel coupling beams combined with replaceable links in the middle, with the links can be replaced easily. Using capacity design of link and over-strength in coupling beams, yielding and damage are limited in link elements, while other elements are expected to remain elastic and undamaged. To understand the behavior of such system, structural analysis was conducted on 15-stories building with coupled shear wall system using replaceable link, and its performance and responses were evaluated. The results were then compared to the performance and responses of conventional model of coupled shear walls without replaceable links. The methods of analyses were pushover and nonlinear time history. Results from pushover analysis show that the maximum displacement response of the structure with replaceable link was better compared to the conventional structure, with yielding occurred on link elements only. However results from nonlinear time history show some damage on the coupling beams in yield performance level. From both analyses, the performance level of structure with replaceable link designed with capacity design concept is Immediate Occupancy. text
