Summary: | Cocoa is one of the most widely grown plants in Indonesia and placing Indonesia as the third largest cocoa producing country in the world. But so far, the use of cocoa pod shells just for animal feed and fertilizer. In the process, cocoa pod shells is simply buried in the ground and rarely processed. The ratio between cocoa pod shells : cocoa beans : fresh placenta was 74%: 24%: 2% of the cocoa pods (Puastuti and Susana, 2014). The annual production of cocoa pods is very high. One of the highest cocoa producing areas in West Java is Ciamis. Total production of dry cocoa beans in 2018 was 355 tonnes with waste reaching 1,346 tonnes. This numbers is huge. Characteristic of cocoa pod shells is textured, hard and thick. This condition encourage the researcher to develop the potential of the cocoa pod shells’s waste into a processed material that can be used in the development of product designs through the water content’s reduction of cocoa pod shells and other exploration methods, so they can give value to the cocoa waste. |
