Summary: | The COVID-19 pandemic has been a shock to a region. The COVID-19 pandemic
is a multi-aspect disaster that we can't make sure when it will be end. The COVID-
19 pandemic gives us a lesson that disaster mitigation must be integrated with
regional development planning. The concept of social vulnerability arises when
socio-economic and demographic factors are recognized to play a role in causing
losses from disasters. Solving social vulnerability is one approach to reduce losses
from disasters. In the previous pandemic, people who socially vulnerable received
unequal impacts. Therefore, the pandemic must be treated as a health and social
problem. Several studies have found that social vulnerability affects the spread of
COVID-19. But, the research conducted is still very limited. More empirical studies
are needed to determine the correlation between social vulnerability and the spread
of COVID-19. By taking a case study in Kabupaten Purbalingga, this study aims to
identify the effect of social vulnerability on the spread of COVID-19. This study
uses a quantitative approach. Deductive method is used to assess social
vulnerability. Spatial descriptive analysis is used to visualize the spread of COVID-
19. Quadrant analysis is used to identify the risks. And then simple linear regression
analysis is used to determine the correlation between social vulnerability and the
spread of COVID-19. This study shows that social vulnerability had a significant
effect on the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, social vulnerabilities must be
addressed in controlling the spread of COVID-19. This study also shows that
interventions should be focused on urban area because urban area is the most at
risk for the COVID-19 pandemic in the study area. |
