IDENTIFICATION OF ION ADSORPTION-TYPE RARE EARTH ELEMENTS ON CLAYS : A CASE STUDY OF MUNTOK AND LUBUK BESAR AREA, BANGKA ISLAND

As technology develops, the need for rare earth elements (REE) is increasing and therefore REE exploration activities are increasing. This study aims to identify the REE-ion adsorption type in clay which is the result of weathering of granite. Samples were taken from weathered granite rocks sourced...

This study aims to identify the REE-ion adsorption type in clay which is the result of weathering of granite. Samples were taken from weathered granite rocks sourced from the Klabat batholith (Muntok area) and Bebulu batholith (Lubuk Besar area). Laboratory analysis carried out in this study used X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) tests. It was found that there were differences in the intensity of quartz and kaolinite minerals, major element components, and different REE patterns in the two study areas. The results show the potential for ion adsorption-type REE in the samples taken in the Lubuk Besar area marked by the REE pattern corresponding to the leach zone and REE accumulation zone, as well as the concentration of Heavy Rare Earth Element (HREE) which is higher than the sample taken at the Muntok location. text
