Summary: | WHO estimates about 80% of the population in developing countries uses plants to overcome their
health problems. One of the plant products that can be used is essential oil. This literature study
aims to examine data related to the potential of essential oils, benefits and processes of
microencapsulation, evaluation of microcapsules and microcapsules preparations. The literature
search was carried out on Google Scholar, Science Direct, Researchgate, and PubMed search
engines which were then grouped based on inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. From the search
results it is known that essential oils have many potential uses for cosmetic and topical dosage form.
In their use in cosmetic and topical fields, essential oils have several problems related to the stability
of volatile compounds, storage stability, and the potential for skin irritation. Microencapsulation is
one method that can be used to overcome these problems. The encapsulants can be carbohydrates,
proteins, and lipids. Microencapsulation of essential oil has been shown can improve stability of
essential oils, increase its therapeutic effect, reduce unwanted side effect, increase product shelf
life, and can control the release of essential oils. Microencapsulation method can be used are spraydrying, coacervation, emulsification, and extrusion. The microcapsule that have been obtained will
be evaluated based on the chemical components of the oil, capsule morphology, size and size
distribution, moisture content, encapsulation efficiency, loading capacity, stability, density, and oil
release. In the field of cosmetic and topical dosage form, microcapsules can be formulated into gel,
ointment, and lotion. There will be an evaluation based on the dosage form, an acute dermal
irritation test, ocular irritation test, and a membrane penetration test.
