The colloidal carrier system microemulsion and nanoemulsion is used to encapsulate, protect, and deliver hydrophilic and lipophilic active substance in topical used. Both systems have nano sized particle so that they have many advantages such as increasing stability and skin penetration. With the benefit of microemulsion and nanoemulsion in topical preparation, both systems have potential to be utilized in cosmetics usage. This review is used for examining differentiation, formulation, preparation, characterization, stabilization, and safety measurement from both microemulsion and nanoemulsion. Literature studies are done systematically by searching the sources from various search engine such as PubMed, MDPI, Science Direct and Google Scholar. Microemulsion and nanoemulsion have same globule size and same macroscopic aspect. The difference between these system is on surface free energy that will affect the preparation method and the stability. Microemulsion and nanoemulsion was being used in cosmetic preparation for anti-aging preparation, sunblock, acne treatment, and skin brightening.
