According to research, there are many plants that has antidiabetic activity. Therefore, in this research, a literature review has been done to gather actual informations regarding plants that has antidiabetic activity. Literature search has been done using Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct search engines. Journals are selected based on its title and abstract. Then, are further selected based on the suitability with the criteria. In this study, there are 75 journals that met the criteria. The literature review shows that plants have the potential to be developed as an alternative medicine for diabetes mellitus type 2. The plant species discussed are plant species from the famili Acanthaceae, Anacardiaceae, Annonaceae, Apocynaceae, Arecaceae, Asparagaceae, Asteraceae, Berberidaceae, Bignoniaceae, Bromeliaceae, Cactaceae, Clusiaceae, Combretaceae, Convolvulaceae, Cornaceae, Crassulaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Dilleniaceae, Dioscoreaceae, Elaeocarpaceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, Lauraceae, Malvaceae, Marantaceae, Melianthaceae, Menispermaceae, Moringaceae, Myrtaceae, Phyllanthaceae, Piperaceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae, Sapodaceae, Sapotaceae, Solanaceae, Theaceae, Urticaceae, Verbencaceae, Vitaceae, and Zingiberaceae. Known mechanism of plants as antidiabetic are improved insulin sensitivity, improved insulin secretion by pancreas, and inhibiting the activity of ?-glucosidase enzyme. Some examples of secondary metabolites that play a role in antidiabetic activity are flavonoids and alkaloids.
