Turpentine in common has 57-86% ?-pinene, 8-12% ?-carene, and minor amounts of other monoterpenes. One of turpentine’s derivative that commonly used in industry is terpineol. Terpineol can be synthesized by hydration of ?-pinene. Terpineol usually used for perfume, cleansing agent, and foaming agent. Hydration of ?-pinene does not convert all ?-pinene into terpineol, but also produce other by products that can possibly formed. That is depend on catalyst and operational condition we used as of affect the selectivity of terpineol. Hence, kinetic study of terpineol synthesis from ?-pinene is needed. This research is focused on kinetic study of terpineol synthesis from ?-pinene with heterogenous reaction model using Initial Rate Method to give the expression of ?-pinene hydration. The purpose of this research is to determine the rate constant (k), activation energy (Ea), frequency or pre-exponential factor (A), equation of correlation between k and temperature for the reaction and determine the empirical model as well the Response Surface Method graph. The reaction of the formation ?-pinene to terpineol using the first reaction order. So that the value of 4,05 x 10-6 is obtained for the reaction without a catalyst and 1,25 x 10-5 for the reaction using a catalyst. From the reaction constant, the value of the activation energy is equal to 2,08 and 1,97 kJ/mol. The optimal value of the reaction constant using Minitab is 1 x 10-4 and 3 x 10-4. text |
