Description
Summary:The purpose of this final project research was to study and to understand the influences of inclination angle and rotational velocity to the performance of a single screw turbine and also to determine the maximum torque, output power, and efficiency. In this research, the operating conditions of a single screw turbine were completely submerged in running water that has a maximum water debit of 1.4 l/s, when the turbine in a horizontal position. The debit that enters the turbine depends on the inclination angle of the turbine. A computational fluid dynamic calculation of a single screw turbine model was carried out to simulate and estimate the average pressure and average inlet and outlet velocity of the turbine, also the torque using ANSYS Fluent software. The water debit studied in this project were 1.37 l/s at 10°, 1.268 l/s at 25°, and 0.9899 l/s at 45°. The rotational velocity of turbine were set at 10 rad/s, 17 rad/s, and 24 rad/s. The k-? SST turbulence model was chosen as the most suitable turbulence model for this simulation. Simulation were carried out for each inclination angle and rotational speed. It was found that in the simulated turbine operation range the inclination angle tends to reduce the turbine performances. At the rotating velocity of 10 rad/s with inclination angle of 10°, 25°, and 45°, the torque were 0.12 N.m, 0.1 N.m, and 0.071 N.m, respectively, while the power output were 1.208 W, 1.04 W, and 0.71 W, respectively. At the same rotating velocity and inclination angles, the the efficiency were 18.94%, 15.84%, and 13.38%, repectively. Meanwhile, the incresing of rotational speed actually tends to improve the single screw turbine performance. At the inclination angle of 10° and rotational velocity of 10 rad/s, 17 rad/s, and 24 rad/s, the torque were 0.12 N.m, 0.16 N.m, and 0.194 N.m, respectively, and the power output were 1.21 W, 2.63 W, and 4.656 W, repectively, while the efficiency were 18.94%, 33.71%, and 49.19%, respectively. The maximum turbine torque, output power, and efficiency at the inclination angle of 10° and rotational velocity of 24 rad/s were 0.194 N.m, 4.656 W, and 49.12%, repectively.
