Description
Summary:Aging is a complex process due to the manifestation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are mainly induced by sunlight. Moringa seed oil contains vitamin E and Moringa leaves contain various bioactive phytochemical compounds as antioxidants. Liquid crystal system (LC) can be used as a carrier for these two components to increase stability, release, permeation of active substances and increase skin hydration. The purpose of this study was to develop an LC emulsion formulation containing seed oil and Moringa leaf extract. Extraction was carried out by modified maceration and index of permanganate, total phenol and antioxidant activity of the extract were determined. In the LC formulation, two combinations of surfactants were used, glycerol monooleate (GMO)- poloxamer 407 and decyl glucoside (DG)-cetostearyl alcohol (CA) with various concentrations and characterized by polarizing microscope. The preparations obtained were evaluated for pH, viscosity, and initial stability tests. A literature review was conducted to examine the results of the evaluation of the quality and efficacy of LC in topical preparations, characterization and application of LC on Google Scholar and PubMed search sites. The extract obtained had a permanganate index of 3.69 and an estimated tannin content of 8.9025 mg tannin/gram extract, a total phenol content of 91.19 mg GAE/gram extract and an IC50 of 0.242 mg/ml. From the resulting formula, the DG:CA formulation was observed to have a pattern with lamellar phase and asymmetry in various ratios. The preparation obtained was stable during the test period. Based on the literature review of the characterization of the LC phase and evaluation of its efficacy, what can be done are the release test, skin permeation, encapsulation efficiency and specific tests for the purpose or target of the drug's therapy. The use of LC DG/CA which contains Moringa leaf extract and seed oil is expected to revitalize the skin by reducing dry skin and fine lines.
