Jambu semarang (Syzygium samarangense) is a species of Syzygium genus and the Myrtaceae family that has been cultivated in Asia and the Pacific region. This review described the scientifically proven information about phytochemical contents, traditional usage, and pharmacological activities of jambu semarang. Finding articles in this review were collected through literature study with DOI, minimum 50 articles which published the last 10 years and included 20 articles in last 2 years. Multiple primary and secondary metabolites of jambu semarang had been reported such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, resorcinol derivatives, acylphloroglucinols, tannins, terpenoids, sterols, and other metabolite groups. Various parts of jambu semarang have been used traditionally as a remedy for cold, itches, cracked tongue, stomach disorder, and urination disorder. Pharmacology activities reported due to the relevance with its phytochemical and traditional uses. Jambu semarang extract demonstrated various pharmacology activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, analgesic, antiinflammatory, antihyperglycemic, antidiabetic, thrombolytic, spasmolytic, cytotoxic, hepatoprotective, anticancer, anthelmintic, anxiolytic, protease inhibitory, and immunomodulatory. Further research regarding isolation and quality control processes of jambu semarang are highly expected due to this future novel drug development. text |
