Constipation can be treated using laxative and prokinetic drugs. The use of commercial laxative and prokinetic drugs causes side effects that are not mild. Therefore, it is necessary to find alternative therapies that can be tolerated or cause fewer side effects from plants. This literature study discusses the use of plants that possess laxative and prokinetic effects to treat constipation and its mechanism of action. Plants generally produce minimal side effects in their use, it is expected that the plants discussed in this study can be used for alternative therapies, the development of new compounds and the manufacture of new drugs to treat constipation. Based on articles found on search engines from 2010 to the present, it was found 29 plants were used empirically in Indonesia, 93 single plants that had been tested in preclinical and clinical terms, and 35 mixture formulas consisting of 2 to 15 plants per formula, with 102 total plants that come from all over the world. Plants with potential laxative and prokinetic effects include Allium mongolicum Regel., Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth., Carissa carandas L., Linum usitatissimum L., Prunus mume (Siebold) & Zucc., Piper nigrum L., Cucumis melo L., Eugenia dysenterica DC., Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., Cassia fistula L., Rosa damascena Herrm., dan Senna alexandrina Mill. with various mechanism of action. text |
