Description
Summary:The dynamic of urban development is measured by population growth, economy, and physical changes that are increasing rapidly. Rapid urban growth will give rise to postmetropolis phenomenon, which means that a s urban growth increases, the city will face more complicated problems. One of the impacts of urban growth is urban environmental problems, which consists of “Brown” environmental issue, related to sanitation and its service, “Grey” environmental issue, caused by industrialization and motorization, and “Green” environmental issue, which caused by high consumption, Every city development has a common goal, to reduce the adverse effect of city development to the quality of the environment. A postmetropolis phenomenon have been happening in Bekasi, which is a metropolitan city with the third largest population in Java Island and has a function as “buffer” zone for activities in DKI Jakarta which impact the economic growth. The impacts of growing population, economy, and physical changes are decrease in enviroment’s quality such as waste problems, slum areas, water pollution, air pollution, and increase CO emission. The local government had conducted studies to improve quality of the urban environment towards a sustainable city, but it had not been resolved yet. According to McGranahan (2001), these things are happening because, the city is experiencing a shift in environmental burden. From the explanations above, the research objective was formulated, to identify the dynamics of development and urban environmental problems in Bekasi, so that the transitional stage of environmental problems can be analyzed. To answer the research objective, case study have been conducted in Bekasi, using secondary data (literature survey and literature review), and the data was analyzed with quantitative analysis methods with explanatory descriptive approaches, spatial with image classification, and multiple linear regression tests, related to the dynamics of development within a period of 20 years and environmental problems in Bekasi City within a period of 10 years, and to anaylze the transitional linkages between dynamics of development and environmental problems in Bekasi City. The result conclude that as PDRB/capita has increased in 10 years, has decreased clean water problems, toilet, slum areas, and air pollution, as for waste problem, water pollution, green open space requirements, and CO emissions has continued to increase. Several environmental problems in Bekasi City occur simultaneously with economic growth, this is different from McGranahan's concept of environmental transition which divides brown, gray, and green environmental problems into three phases (poor, pre-prosperous, and prosperous city phases).
