Summary: | The ideal depigmentation compound should have a strong, fast, and selective whitening effect on
highly active melanocytes, but doesn?t have any side effects/ This leads to the use of herbal
ingredients as raw materials for skin whitening cosmetic creams. The mechanism of action of most
commercially available cosmetics or skin whitening compounds is as tyrosinase enzyme inhibitors.
The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review and analyze the skin whitening effect
of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaf extract in cream dosage form. A literature review was carried
out on the extraction and characterization process of O. basilicum L. leaf extract, tyrosinase
inhibitory activity of O. basilicum L. extract, and cream formulations and evaluation tests for O.
basilicum L. leaf extract cream preparations. Based on the results of literature review, O. basilicum
L. leaf extract showed tyrosinase inhibitory activity compared to kojic acid, arbutin, and DMSO. The
recommended extraction method is the hydrodistillation method. The recommended cream
formulations are basil leaf extract (0,05%), petrolatum jelly (4-25%), paraffin oil (6%), isopropyl
palmitate (0,05-5,5%), strearic acid (1-20%), span 60 (2%), cetyl alcohol (2-10%), methyl paraben
(0,02-0,3%), propyl paraben (0,01 ?0,5%), propylene glycol (5-10%), tween 60 (1,5%) and distilled
water(qs). The use of O. basilicum L. leaf extract as a cream preparation is expected to have a skin
whitening effect.
