Flavonoids consist of many sub-groups, one of which is flavones. Various studies have shown that flavonoids can inhibit the tyrosinase enzyme, which related to hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs due to the excessive production of melanin in the skin. In melanin biosynthesis, ROS is produced which can increase melanin production and the tyrosinase enzyme is needed to catalyze the oxidation of tyrosine to dopaquinone, which is the rate-determining step for biosynthesis. Thus, melanin order can be inhibited by antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors. This literature review aims to examine the potential of flavone compounds from plants as antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors to be developed as active compound candidates for hyperpigmentation. This literature review is limited to research articles of the last ten years, originating from 2011 to 2021. It was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar. The search results were divided into two parts; flavone antioxidant activity based on the DPPH method and flavone tyrosinase inhibition activity on L-tyrosine and LDOPA substrates. Various studies show that flavone compounds have antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibition with different strengths depending on their structure. The antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibition of flavone compounds are influenced by hydroxylation, methoxylation, and glycosylation. Flavone compounds that have strong potential as antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors are luteolin and tricin. Therefore, these two compounds have the potential to be developed as candidates for active compounds to overcome hyperpigmentation. text
