Nowadays, various formulations of cosmetic products that can increase the skin????s function in protecting itself from the environment and also reduce the effect of free radicals on the skin have been thoroughly researched and applied, starting from antioxidant products, anti-aging, antiwrinkle, up to skin-whitening products, which are usually available in topical dosage forms. But, the presence of stratum corneum layer in the epidermis become the rate-limiting barrier of the drug delivery system, which causes the active substance????s absorption being reduced?To solve that particular problem, there have been researches of optimizing lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) as an effective drug delivery system. This article review, which uses narrative review method, was made to explain fully about the lyotropic liquid crystalline phenomena, giving informations about recent successful formulations and various kind of amphiphilic lipids that have been used to formulate the LLC phases, and also to summarize the recent advances of applications of LLC as drug delivery systems in cosmetic products in the past one decade (2010-2021). Search engines in PubMed, NCBI, Science Direct, Wiley Online Library, Hindawi, and Google Scholar websites were used to collect all of the datas. The inclusive criterias are national or international literature; original articles; written in Indonesia or English; published at maximum 11 years (2010-2021) for the application of LLC system part; and using keywords such as ????lyotropic liquid crystalline????and ????LLC formulation and its application in cosmetic products?????Based on the reviewed literatures, the writer got various kind of informations regarding lyotropic liquid crystalline phenomena, 11 kinds of amphiphilic lipid substances that are often used to create LLC phases in topical dosage forms, and 9 examples of application of LLC in cosmetic products. Based on the result, it was found that lyotropic liquid crystalline shows a great potential to be explored even further as an effective drug delivery system for topical dosage form.
