Description
Summary:COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new type of coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Until now, efforts to find the best treatment to overcome this pandemic are still ongoing. Apart from medication, there are many studies being conducted to determine the efficacy and safety of supplements for COVID-19. One of the potential supplements is zinc, which has a role on the immune system and antiviral activity. Regardless of its benefits, zinc has problems with its varying bioavailability, long-term use that can lead to copper deficiency and current markers of zinc status are not accurate enough to represent overall zinc levels. Based on supplements potential and problems related to zinc, it is important to get an overview of public knowledge regarding COVID-19 supplementation to assess educational needs and determine the method of measuring zinc levels in supplements appropriately. Therefore, a survey with a questionnaire and literature review about zinc levels analysis was carried out. The survey results show that public knowledge regarding supplements is still lacking and education regarding COVID-19 supplementation is needed. In this case, pharmacists can be one of the parties with a role to provide socialization related to COVID-19 supplementation to the public. The literature review was carried out by comparing the zinc content analysis with atomic absorption spectrometry of various sample forms based on the preparation method. The results show that the sample preparation method can vary widely depending on the complexity of the matrix. Supplement preparation can be carried out by conventional and preconcentration/separation, one of the method that can be choose is solid phase extraction. The method chosen should be validated to assess performance and confirm that the method is applicable.
