Summary: | The 5G technology offers plenty new use cases, business models and improvements
for all stakeholders and human life. Some of the major Mobile Network Operators
(MNO) all around the world had deployed 5G since 2018 and raced as pioneer or
early adopters. However, some other countries, MNOs, or telecom companies in
general are still not sure about 5G technology considering the huge investment cost,
unclarity of new business use cases and readiness of vertical industries as the main
customer. Indonesia is in the early stage of 5G development since first launching in
June 2021, and still face many challenges in near future.
This study analyses 5G technology development in Indonesia for telecom industry
with discussion focuses on 5G outlook in Indonesia, real field challenges and
proposed partial solution. Looking at this study, policy makers and telecom
companies can leverage the findings and strategize the most effective public policy
and private investments. Thus, this study based on pragmatism philosophical
thinking and abductive approach to answer the real practical issue.
The qualitative data collection uses Focus Discussion Group (FGD) and in-depth
semi-structured interview to key respondents to get the bottom of real issues and
possible proposed solutions. Scenario planning and cross cases analysis are used as
qualitative tools to produce initial analysis, proposed solutions, and collaborative
models for 5G development in Indonesia. The process then continued with Agent
Based Modelling (ABM) as scenario simulation to demonstrate the 5G diffusion
and stakeholder’s key performance indicators (KPI) such as number of end users,
diffusion time and revenue. The simulation results that implementing the proposed
collaborative model could accelerate the diffusion time by 34% and increase of total
revenue by 105% from year three to five combined. |
