Description
Summary:Cerium (IV) is a metal element in the lanthanide group that is used as an oxidizing agent in acidic solutions. This ability is used as the basis for the development of a method to determine the content of the active substance indirectly in pharmaceutical preparations by fluorimetry through the reduction reaction of Ce (IV) by the active substance into a fluorescent form of Ce (III). The study was conducted using the literature review method. There were 20 journal studies that will be further reviewed in this analysis based on inclusion criteria. The Ce (IV) form is used to oxidize active substances in pharmaceutical preparations, namely ammonium cerium (IV) sulfate and cerium (IV) sulfate. The Ce (IV) ion can oxidize active substances which have characteristics such as stable to acids and heating, soluble in water or other solvents that are miscible with water including heterocyclic compounds with S atoms, compounds with ?-lactam rings, compounds with CH benzylic groups, compounds with thiol groups, phenolic compounds, dihydropyridine compounds, compounds with alcohol groups, enol compounds, quinolones and compounds with C-N bond. The active substance will react redox with Ce (IV) optimally in acid medium, Ce (IV) concentration, and the required dilution solvent, according to the optimization analysis. To speed up the reaction rate, some active substances must be heated. Based on validation studies, spectrofluorimetric method using Ce (IV) can be used for the determination of active substances in pharmaceutical preparations. .
