The great benefits of the secondary metabolites cause a high industrial demand. However, the natural production of some secondary metabolites in plants tends to be very low (less than 1% of the dry weight) also dependent on the physiological conditions and the development of the plants. Due to that, this literature review was conducted to investigate the use of bacterial cytochromes for the heterologous production of secondary metabolites in plants. This study was carried out by utilizing scientific search engine and electronic database such as Google Scholar, PubMed and ScienceDirect. The aim of this study is to examine to the characteristics P450 cytochrome bacteria, its use for secondary metabolite production, its cytochromic engineering and biochemical pathways that can be used for the heterologous production of plant secondary metabolites in bacteria. After collecting and extracting information, the data analysis process was carried out. In recent years, the production of some secondary metabolites in plants using metabolic engineering in bacteria has sparked interest and made tremendous progress. Cytochromes are essential for the production of plant secondary metabolites. Cytochrome P450 are enzymes with high catalytic efficiency and selectivity which are very important for the reconstruction of metabolic pathways in heterologous hosts. Thus, bacterial cytochrome P450 could be used as an alternative for the heterologous production of secondary metabolites in the bacterial host. The heterologous expression of bacterial cytochromes has been proven to be a biocatalyst which assist the biotransformation of secondary metabolite precursors during the biosynthesis process of secondary metabolites in plant. text |

Secondary metabolites are molecules with low molecular weight which have diverse chemical
structures and biological activities. The great benefits of the secondary metabolites cause a high
industrial demand. However, the natural production of some secondary metabolites in plants tends
to be very low (less than 1% of the dry weight) also dependent on the physiological conditions and
the development of the plants. Due to that, this literature review was conducted to investigate the
use of bacterial cytochromes for the heterologous production of secondary metabolites in plants.
This study was carried out by utilizing scientific search engine and electronic database such as
Google Scholar, PubMed and ScienceDirect. The aim of this study is to examine to the
characteristics P450 cytochrome bacteria, its use for secondary metabolite production, its
cytochromic engineering and biochemical pathways that can be used for the heterologous
production of plant secondary metabolites in bacteria. After collecting and extracting information,
the data analysis process was carried out. In recent years, the production of some secondary
metabolites in plants using metabolic engineering in bacteria has sparked interest and made
tremendous progress. Cytochromes are essential for the production of plant secondary
metabolites. Cytochrome P450 are enzymes with high catalytic efficiency and selectivity which are
very important for the reconstruction of metabolic pathways in heterologous hosts. Thus, bacterial
cytochrome P450 could be used as an alternative for the heterologous production of secondary
metabolites in the bacterial host. The heterologous expression of bacterial cytochromes has been
proven to be a biocatalyst which assist the biotransformation of secondary metabolite precursors
during the biosynthesis process of secondary metabolites in plant.
