All this time, the management of insomnia can be done pharmacologically and nonpharmacologically. The use of drugs to treat insomnia has been shown to have dangerous side effects such as anterograde amnesia, motor impairment, difficulty concentrating, reduced cognitive function, and ataxia. Therefore, to minimize the side effects caused by using these drugs, it is necessary to look for alternatives in the form of herbal medicines derived from plants that have sedative-hypnotic activity but have lower side effects. This literature study was conducted to collect data on Indonesian plants that have sedative-hypnotic activity and determine which plants have the most potential to treat insomnia. Sources of information used are books (Cabe Puyang and Materia Medika Indonesia) for empirical literature and scientific articles published on the Pubmed and Google Scholar search engine for empirical literature, pre-clinical trial, and clinical trial literature. Based on a review of the entire literature containing evidence of empirical efficacy, it was found that 41 Indonesian plants had sedative-hypnotic activity. Based on a review of the entire pre-clinical trial research literature, it was found that 24 Indonesian plants had sedative-hypnotic activity with the most potential plants to treat insomnia are Myristica fragrans and Stachytarpheta cayennensis. And based on a review of the entire clinical trial literature, it was found that 4 Indonesian plants with sedative-hypnotic activity are Viola odorata L., Mimosa pudica L., Passiflora incarnata, dan Valeriana officinalis. text |
