Hyperuricemia is a condition in which uric acid levels in the serum are above normal due to disruption of purine metabolism or uric acid excretion. Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme that functions as a catalyst for the oxidation of hypoxanthine and xanthine to produce uric acid. To reduce uric acid production, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor is needed. Based on various studies, it’s known that flavonoids are active compounds as xanthine oxidase inhibitors. This study aims to examine the potential of xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of various compounds belonging to the flavonoid group through literature reviews from various scientific journals. Literature review showed that the compounds in the flavonoid group such as flavones, flavonols, isoflavones, flavanolols, flavanols, chalcones, aurones and anthocyanins had high potential for xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. The sub groups namely flavones, flavonols and isoflavones had better activity than other groups. The inhibitory activity of xanthine oxidase of the flavonoid group was influenced by the structure of flavonoids including the existence of hydroxyl groups at C-5 and C-7 in ring A, double bonds at positions C-2 and C-3 and planar structures on flavonoids provide beneficial effects for xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. text |

Flavonoid is one of the main groups of secondary metabolites which are widely distributed in plants.
Flavonoids have been shown to have great potential in xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity for the
treatment of hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia is a condition in which uric acid levels in the serum are
above normal due to disruption of purine metabolism or uric acid excretion. Xanthine oxidase is an
enzyme that functions as a catalyst for the oxidation of hypoxanthine and xanthine to produce uric
acid. To reduce uric acid production, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor is needed. Based on various
studies, it’s known that flavonoids are active compounds as xanthine oxidase inhibitors. This study
aims to examine the potential of xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of various compounds
belonging to the flavonoid group through literature reviews from various scientific journals.
Literature review showed that the compounds in the flavonoid group such as flavones, flavonols,
isoflavones, flavanolols, flavanols, chalcones, aurones and anthocyanins had high potential for
xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. The sub groups namely flavones, flavonols and isoflavones had
better activity than other groups. The inhibitory activity of xanthine oxidase of the flavonoid group
was influenced by the structure of flavonoids including the existence of hydroxyl groups at C-5 and
C-7 in ring A, double bonds at positions C-2 and C-3 and planar structures on flavonoids provide
