NANOEMULSION FORMULATION OF CANDLENUT AND PEPPERMINT OIL AND ITS EFFECTIVITY TEST AS HAIR GROWTH PROMOTER FOR ANDROGENIC ALOPECIA MICE MODEL

Androgenic alopecia is a type of alopecia mostly experienced by men that occurs due to excess of testosterone which is metabolized to 5?-Dihydrotestosterone (5?- DHT) by 5?-reductase enzyme. Candlenut oil contains oleic and linoleic acid that can function as an inhibitor of the 5?-reductase enz...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/56666 Androgenic alopecia is a type of alopecia mostly experienced by men that occurs due to excess of testosterone which is metabolized to 5?-Dihydrotestosterone (5?- DHT) by 5?-reductase enzyme. Candlenut oil contains oleic and linoleic acid that can function as an inhibitor of the 5?-reductase enzyme and can prevent the metabolism of testosterone to 5?-DHT. The use of candlenut oil will be combined with peppermint oil which can help multiply the number of hair follicles and enlarge the size of hair follicles. This study aims to develop nanoemulsion formula and evaluate its effectiveness as hair growth in androgenic alopecia mice. Nanoemulsion was constructed by using combination of surfactant decyl glucoside, PEG 40 HCO and co-surfactant ethoxydiglycol by ultrasonication method using sonicator probe. The selected formula was characterized for organoleptic, viscosity, pH, morphology and stability test. Then the ocular irritation and acute dermal irritation tested on rabbits. The effectivity of nanoemulsion to promote hair growth was tested on mice by observing length and weight of hair that grow in androgenic alopecia mice. The results showed that the best formula was obtained by using of PEG 40 HCO, decyl glucoside and ethoxydiglycol with 2:1:1 ratio. Nanoemulsion has globule size of 79.13 nm ± 3.77, polydispersity index 0.38 ± 0.03, pH 4.9-5.0 and stable at 40C and 250C storage for 21 days. Moreover, the nanoemulsion was negligible irritant based on primary skin and non-irritant base on ocular irritation test. The test result showed that the nanoemulsion can accelerate hair growth in the anagen phase. In addition, nanoemulsion also provided the highest hair density among other test groups that received induction. To conclude, the nanoemulsion consist of candlenut oil and peppermint oil is potential to promote hair growth for androgenic alopecia in mice. text
